A 73 year-old Hamilton man died Sunday in a snowmobile accident in the
Bitterroot National Forest.  The accident happened Sunday afternoon in the Upper
Rye Creek area near Rooster Comb on the Darby Ranger District. The victim was snowmobiling with a group of friends and got separated.  When the  group found him approximately 30 minutes later, the victim was unconscious with the machine on top of him.  Friends performed CPR on scene but the victim never regained consciousness. Ravalli County Search and Rescue, Ravalli County Sherriff’s Office, Forest Service Law Enforcement, and Life Flight were all involved in recovering the victim’s body. Rescuers describe terrain around the accident site as extremely steep and
inaccessible in areas.  The incident did not involve an avalanche. The
Ravalli County Coroner is investigating the specific cause of death.  The name
of the victim is being withheld pending notification of family.
