HELENA, Mont. (AP) — Greg Gianforte says shortcomings of tribal governments are hindering a free market from flourishing on Montana's American Indian reservations.

The Republican candidate for governor made his remarks in response to a question about Montana's reservations during an appearance in Huntley on July 21.

Gianforte says the way to lift people out of poverty is through the free market. But, he goes on, some of the things needed for a free market to prosper are lacking on Montana's reservations, such as consistent rule of law and respect for property rights.

He says he would advise would-be entrepreneurs on the Crow reservation to start their businesses outside the reservation.

Crow tribal chairman Darrin Old Coyote said Friday that Gianforte is wrong and that the candidate needs to do his homework on Indian Country.
