HELENA, Mont. (AP) — Republican candidate for governor Greg Gianforte is telling supporters he will match all campaign contributions dollar for dollar.

Gianforte told supporters in Huntley July 21 that he and his wife Susan are "all in."

The Huntley event was recorded by a Montana Democratic Party volunteer. Gianforte's statements were confirmed Friday by event organizer Becky Robison.

The Bozeman technology entrepreneur is trying to unseat Democratic Gov. Steve Bullock. Gianforte had donated about $950,000 to his campaign as of July 27, according to campaign finance reports.

Montana State University political science professor David Parker says he believes Gianforte wants to show reluctant donors that he's willing to put his own money on the line along with theirs.

Parker says Gianforte's pledge echoes a similar one made by presidential candidate Donald Trump in June.
