Advanced Imaging in Missoula has started taking applications for free digital mammography screenings to test for breast cancer.

"On October 1, we are offering free digital mammography to women who are uninsured, under-insured, or those who might have a high deductible insurance plan that doesn't have a comprehensive mammography benefit," said Advanced Imaging Director Cathy Palmer.

Around 50 women will be able to take advantage of the free service.

Although the screenings begin in October, applications for the service will be accepted through the month of September. Palmer said there's extra meaning behind the October screenings.

"It's Breast Cancer Awareness Month," Palmer said. "We just thought this would be a great opportunity for all of us in the community to realize just how important Breast Cancer Awareness Month is to each and every one of us. Even if it's not personal to the individual, we all know someone has been effected."

Palmer said a digital mammography typically costs around $270. The free screenings are available thanks to efforts from Advanced Imaging, The Montana Cancer Screening Program and Community Medical Center.

To schedule a free mammogram at Advanced Imaging, call to make an appointment at either (866) 462-4306 (toll free) or (406) 327-3950.

Advanced Imaging is located next to Community Medical Center and in the Grant Creek Town Center near REI and T.J. Maxx.
