On January 1, Montana State Parks will host First Day Hikes at a number of our state parks, including one in our neighborhood.

In addition to Makoshika, Spring Meadow Lake, Flathead Lake/Wayfarers, Lone Pine and Lewis and Clark Caverns State Parks, Travelers' Rest State Park near Lolo will be welcoming New Year's Day hikers to take a walk into history on this easy one-mile hike. It's an opportunity to ring in the new by watching for winter birds and wildlife and exploring the rich riparian area along Lolo Creek. Then return to the Travelers' Rest Visitor Center for some hot chocolate and a winter ecology game.

No dogs, please. Simply meet at the visitor center at 11:00 a.m. January 1. You should wear winter-appropriate clothing and footwear. If you would like to learn more ahead of time you can call 406-273-4253.

"First Day Hikes" is an annual nationwide special event co-sponsored by America's State Parks. All 50 states will be participating this year. If you decide to go, we hope you are greeted with sunshine on a beautiful New Year's Day 2019!
