Fire evacuation order lifted for Waterton Lakes park

HELENA, Mont. (AP) — Canadian officials have lifted an evacuation order for Waterton Lakes National Park after rain helped slow a fire burning across the border in Montana's Glacier National Park.

Parks Canada officials said in a statement Monday that most of last week's closures have been lifted for Waterton park's trails, backcountry campgrounds and waterways.

The fire threat comes a year after another blaze swept through the Alberta park, affecting more than 80 percent of its trails.

Rain fell on the fire over the weekend, suppressing but not extinguishing the 3-square-mile (8-square-kilometer) blaze. Trails and the boat landing near Goat Haunt in Glacier are closed.

The rain also slowed another fire burning in Glacier near Lake McDonald.

Evacuations there remain in place and officials say there is the possibility of wind-driven fire activity later this week when drier weather arrives.
