Officials from The Missoula Fire Department, the Health Department and and Police all responded this week when an unknown liquid appeared on the Clark Fork River. It was later determined that someone had dumped a gallon of transmission fluid into a downtown storm drain. Environmental Health Specialist Peter Nielsen with the Missoula City-County Health Department says downtown storm drains empty directly into the river. My interview with Mr. Nielsen is attached. Neilsen reminds Missoulians never to dump any hazardous materials into the storm drains, but rather dispose of them in an environmentally friendly manner.
