While the Deepwater Horizon disaster of 2010 may have tempered enthusiasm for offshore drilling, the current rise in gas prices has turned the public back in that direction.

According to a new Pew Research Center poll of 1,503 adults, 65 percent favor increasing offshore oil drilling. That’s up from 57 percent last year, and 44 percent in June of 2010, during the Gulf of Mexico oil spill.

Eighty-nine percent of the Republicans Pew surveyed currently favor more drilling, as do 64 percent of independents and 50 percent of Democrats.
