Montana Legal Services wants to take over representing indigent children in neglect cases. To fund the change, the legislature would take money from the public defender's office. Montana  ACLU Executive Director, Scott Crichton, told committee members they have a responsibility to keep the agency from failing.

Crighton says this is an example of partisan politics, but members of the judiciary committee say the legislation was drafted by both republicans and democrats.
