A community forum to discuss gaps in the law enforcement community’s response to sexual assaults will be held on Tuesday, May 27.

Missoula Police Public Information Officer, Detective Sergeant Travis Welsh said the forum is a chance to learn about a new Safety and Accountability Audit.

“The forum is an opportunity for Missoula citizens to come in and speak with some major players and learn more about this new safety and Security Audit that is going to happen later this year,” Walsh said. “They’ll learn the purpose of the audit, how it will be implemented, and to potentially provide input into how it’s carried out. The idea is to see if there are any gaps in the criminal justice system in the investigations into sexual violence, and to examine how we can close those gaps.”

Those who will be available to answer questions will include Missoula Police Captain Mike Colyer, former Missoula Chief Administrative Officer Janet Donahue and Mayor John Engen.

Welsh says the audit and the community forum are all part of the agreement between the Department of Justice and the city entered into after reports of sexual assaults brought an investigation that included the University of Montana, the City Police Department and the Missoula County Attorney’s Office.

The community forum will be Tuesday, May 27 at 11 a.m. in the Missoula City Council Chambers at 140 West Pine Street.
