Ministry coordinator for the Great Northern District of Foursquare Churches, Ken Wise, said Joseph Dunn came to the school as a kindergartner.

“Joe started school in kindergarten and stayed all the way through the 10th grade,” Wise said. “Joe was a quiet young man. He was always very caring and concerned about others. He always wanted to serve in every way that he possibly could around the school, helping the teachers and looking out for the younger students as he grew older. In a way, the motto of law enforcement is to serve and protect, and that was Joe.”

Wise was surprised that Dunn had decided to join the Marine Corps.

“I actually talked to him about it, and asked him if he really wanted to do this, go through boot camp and possibly be sent to war,” Wise said. “His response to me was, ‘Yeah, I get it, I understand, and I want to serve my country and I want to serve people.”

Wise said Dunn’s mother still lives in Missoula and attends the Foursquare church every Sunday. He said the qualities that Dunn showed as a young child were apparent even after he became a Marine, worked for a time at the Missoula County Detention Center,¬†and became a Cascade County Sheriff’s Deputy.

“In my mind he really stood out as a quality individual of high character,” Wise said. “The qualities that come to mind are honesty, integrity, loving, caring and wanting to serve. Those would be the things that I would want people to know about Joe.”
