Two men have filed a federal civil rights complaint against the Butte school district over the condition of the softball fields the Butte High girls use.

The Montana Standard reports Sid deBarathy and Mike Foley filed their complaint with the Office for Civil Rights in Seattle. It argues the Stodden Park fields are inadequate and the district is out of compliance with Title IX, a federal law that guarantees girls at public schools and colleges get sports facilities on par with those provided for boys.

DeBarathy said he's working with the district to improve the facility, but only had a 60-day window to follow up with OCR after the district reported it was not violating Title IX.

Athletics director Chuck Merrifield says the school is working on a plan to improve the fields.
