The Big Hole National Battlefield Visitor Center is closed December 25th and will also be closed December 31-January 1st for the holidays.

The winter hours, according to Leslie Lula, are 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily. At the newly renovated center, you can check out the exhibits, watch a video and then head out on the trails with your cross country skis or snowshoes.

The Big Hole Battlefield is southeast of the Bitterroot Valley. At the top of Lost Trail Pass, turn left onto Chief Joseph Pass and after you reach the bottom of the hill, you'll see the battlefield sign, off the north side of Highway 43.

The Big Hole National Battlefield is the site of a battle between the Nez Perce Indians and the 7th U.S. Infrantry, with civilian volunteers. The bloody conflict occurred August 9 and 10, 1877.
