Scammers across the country have been successful at stealing social security information from individuals by claiming to help them enroll in a new utility credit program supposedly put in place by president Barack Obama. Better Business Bureau P.R. and Media Specialist, Chelsea Dannen says the scam will likely appear in Montana soon. In explaining why the scam has been effective Dannon says that "these scammers are being really clever," by using the Presidents name in an election year and also pointed out that one of the reason people fall for the scam is that " it's hard to keep up with everything that's going on, the new programs that are in place, and we're all looking for a little help." In the following clip, Dannen explains the scam in detail and gives advise on how to avoid being cheated.

A good rule of thumb is to never hand out sensitive personal information to incoming calls by individuals claiming to speak on behalf of a utility company. If you are already being provided utility service, the utility company should already have the information they need to have on file.
