Bear-deterrent pepper spray is a recommended precaution when hiking in bear country, but thousands of canisters end up in landfills each year. Many full canisters are often discarded, because they are not allowed on commercial flights. Yellowstone area partners are collaborating in a new bear spray canister recycling effort. Park Spokesman Dan Hottle says now , Yellowstone- area visitors can be safe, and be green.

The initial prototype was funded by a grant from the Gallatin National Forest. Canister collection sites are located throughout the Yellowstone region, surrounding national forests  and wildlife refuges. Yellowstone national canister collection sites can be found at www.bearsprayrecycling.info.
