Agricultural producers in Fort Benton received a briefing on the upcoming farm bill from U.S. Senator Max Baucus, who held a listening session on Wednesday to discuss the bill. The tight federal budget is forcing lawmakers to take a good look at what is provided in the bill. Senator Baucus says he isn't ready to concede direct payments to eligible producers.

Baucus hopes to keep crop insurance and disaster assistance plans in the new farm bill.

The stop in Fort Benton was one of three stops the senator made this week, to hear from producers on what they want included in a new farm bill.
