As you plan or just wait for spur-of-the-moment adventure to come, here's a suggestion for Memorial Day weekend and beyond!

The Montana Department of Transportation has announced the opening of U.S. Highway 38, known to most of us as Skalkaho Pass. While it can be a white-knuckle affair for the driver, your friends and family can take in the breathtaking scenery, especially near the summit, where you can feel like you are at the top of a lost world.

For those not familiar, the Skalkaho Highway connects Highway 93, just a couple miles south of Hamilton, with Highway 1, just a few miles south of Philipsburg. The highlight for most is Skalkaho Falls, a rather short but very intimidating waterfall that provides a a couple of spots to pull the vehicle over and hop out for a closer look.

The MDT currently describes road conditions as "dry/mostly dry." If you're looking for a way to spend a couple hours taking in scenery the Montana way, this one is a must. Enjoy and all the best this Memorial Day weekend.
