‘Jeopardy!’ Host Alex Trebek Suffers Heart Attack

Alex Trebek gave new meaning to ‘Jeopardy!’ when the longtime game show host landed in the hospital on Saturday after what’s been deemed a “mild heart attack.”

Entertainment Weekly reports a rep for the 71-year-old icon said he is “in good spirits and is currently under observation and undergoing further testing.” A full recovery is expected, and Trebek is set to start taping the 29th season of ‘Jeopardy!’ next month.

Maybe this ordeal will make him rethink his diet — during an interview with the Associated Press back in May, he reported having a candy bar and diet soda for breakfast. But he also said that although he’d once mused out loud about retiring after the 30th season of ‘Jeopardy!,’ nothing was set in stone.

“Saying that I’ve THOUGHT about it doesn’t mean that I’m DOING it,” he said, adding, “You have the security of a familiar environment, a familiar format, but you have the excitement of new clues and new contestants on every program. You can’t beat that! It’s like saying, ‘I’m married but every day I have a new wife coming in.’ You know?”

Another of his favorite things about the popular game show that made him so famous? It doesn’t play to the lowest common denominator. “We tell you it’s OK to be bright, to know a lot of things, and to want to learn,” he said.

But if he does decide to retire, don’t expect a lot of fanfare: “I’m just gonna come out and tell our director to leave an extra 25 or 30 seconds at the end of the game, that I want to say something. And I’ll just say, ‘That’s it. Thank you. Goodbye.’”
