Update: As of about 1:30 p.m., a police blockade on 23rd avenue has ended. According to Missoula Police Public Information Officer Travis Welsh, there were no arrests and no signs of a threat to the public.

Welsh says a woman called police late on Wednesday, March 3, with concerns that her husband was suicidal and might be in possession of a weapon. Police began looking for the man's vehicle, but never found it. On March 4, the wife notified police that her husband had returned home.

Police responded to the scene of the home and blocked off traffic to 23rd avenue, but as more details emerged, Welsh says that the situation appeared to look less and less like a threat to either the public or the family involved.

Original Story: As of 11:45 a.m., Police cars are blocking 23rd Avenue in Missoula's South Hills as authorities attempt to handle a possible suicide situation today, March 4.

"We had a report of a man that is potentially suicidal in the area of 23rd and Foothills," said Missoula Police Public Information Officer Travis Welsh. "Right now we are conducting efforts to try to make contact with the man and see if we can offer assistance or if he will accept resources from us. We are told that he does posses weapons, but we don't know if he is a danger to anybody else at this point. We are still trying to assess. But we have closed of 23rd street at this point and we ask people to avoid that area if possible."

So far, Welsh says police have had "almost no contact" with the man at all and it is still unclear if he is brandishing a weapon.

By 1:00 p.m., Chief Charlo Elementary was calling parents to warn them of possible travel difficulties to and from the school because of the blockade on 23rd avenue. A few minutes later the following e-mail was sent out by Missoula Public Schools:

Due to a situation at a private home in the South Hills, 23rd Street is blocked off for several blocks between Highwood and 55th Street.

This does not impact student safety at Chief Charlo Elementary School.

This will impact routes home for walking and bus riding students that attend Chief Charlo Elementary School or who live in the South Hills area. We will be following up with more information regarding routes home as soon as possible.
