A public meeting is planned Oct. 21 in Butte to discuss the operating permit for a proposed underground gold mine about 15 miles south of the city.

A Draft Environmental Impact Statement that analyzes several alternatives for the Butte Highlands Project and two haul route alternatives is on the agenda.

The Montana Department of Environmental Quality doesn't have a preferred alternative concerning haul routes.

But the agency does prefer an option that expands groundwater monitoring to include more sampling and monitoring points.

The meeting is from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Copper King Hotel.
