EAST HELENA, Mont. (AP) — A Montana State University student died and four people were seriously injured in a two-vehicle collision on U.S. Highway 12 east of East Helena.

The Montana Highway Patrol says an eastbound sport utility vehicle tried to pass several cars on the two-lane road when it collided with an oncoming car at about 2 p.m. Sunday.

Trooper David Gleich says the driver of the car swerved off the road to avoid the SUV, but the driver of the SUV also swerved and the vehicles collided in the ditch.

Lewis and Clark County Coroner Mickey Nelson tells the Independent Record (http://bit.ly/1fx2ONz) that 22-year-old Carolyn Thompson of Eugene, Ore., died at the scene.

Gleich says the drivers of both vehicles and two passengers in the SUV were hospitalized.
